The 5-4-3-2-1-0 Growth Formula

During my recent talk at the Little Seedlings Preschool Annual Day, I had exactly 10 minutes to give parents a toolkit they could actually use. In an age where we are all overwhelmed with information, I wanted to share something memorable, simple, and most importantly, doable.

We all love a good rhythm. So, I shared the 5-4-3-2-1-0 Growth Formula. Think of this as your gentle game plan for raising healthy, active children without stress.

5 Colors Daily

The goal is simple: try to get five different colors of fruits and vegetables onto your child’s plate throughout the day. More colors mean a wider variety of nutrients. Whether it’s beetroot raita at breakfast, a few cherry tomatoes as a snack, stir-fried capsicum at lunch, or peas and eggplant at dinner, you aren’t just feeding them; you’re feeding them a rainbow.

4 Meals with Protein

Our little ones are growing at an incredible rate. To support that, aim for four small servings of protein tucked into their day. It could be a boiled egg, some hung curd, sprouts, or even a handful of green peas alongside their regular dal-chawal-sabji.  It takes the guesswork out of fueling their growth.

3 Screen-Free Meals

When a child is glued to a tablet or a mobile while eating, their brain misses the ‘I am full’ or ‘I need more’ signal. This leads to a disconnected relationship with food and may make them overeat or undereat. Put the devices away, be a role model, and enjoy a family meal. You’ll notice they actually start to enjoy what’s on their plate when they can see and smell it.

2-Hour Wind Down

Late dinners can unintentionally pause a child’s growth hormones. If the body is still busy processing a heavy meal right before bed, it doesn’t shift into deep growth and recovery mode as effectively. Try to finish dinner at least two hours before bedtime. If they are genuinely hungry later, a small glass of milk with a few nuts is perfectly fine. This is also the time to dim the lights and put away mobiles to avoid bedtime hyperactivity.

1 Hour of Play

Aim for 60 minutes of sweaty, heart-pumping fun. Real movement puts the kind of healthy pressure on the bones, which is essential for height and strength. Ideally, let them run around outdoors so they get their daily dose of sunshine.

0 Tolerance for Chaotic Mealtimes

This is non-negotiable. Yelling, coaxing, or forcing a child to eat creates a ‘stress-heavy’ environment. When a child is stressed, their body shifts out of ‘rest and digest’ mode, meaning they won’t absorb nutrients well. Stay calm. A peaceful meal is a nutritious meal.

A Gentle Reality Check

I told the parents at Little Seedlings: every day will not be a perfect 5-4-3-2-1. Some days will be a 3-2-0, and that is absolutely okay. The secret isn’t being perfect every single day; it’s being consistent over time.

The parents loved how easy this was to keep in mind. I hope it helps your family, too.
